Ellen White's Bio

Ellen White is a native of Lynchburg, Virginia.  She graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1980 with degrees in both History and Studio Art.  After graduation, she obtained her law degree and her career path led her away from painting for 30 years.  In anticipation of retirement, she renewed her love of watercolor painting as a student of Purnell Pettyjohn in 2011.  She has also studied plein air painting in watercolor at the Summer Artists Program at Nimrod Hall for the past several years.

This year began like others.  I spent February in Key West, Florida taking watercolor class with Karen Beauprie and painting at different locations every Wednesday with the Key West Plein Air Painters group.   I came home at the beginning of March and took a gouache workshop a week later with David Eakin at the Studio Schools in Roanoke.  Then mid-March, everything shut down due to the pandemic.  As a result, there was no Summer Arts Program at Nimrod Hall and events such as the Lynchburg Art Festival were cancelled.  To the extent there has been a silver lining to this crazy year, it has been the extra time I’ve had available to enjoy painting in my studio at Art on 12th and, while wearing masks & social distancing, the opportunity to see more of the other artists there.
